The first, a very amusing communication problem on our side. Three weeks in, we were told that if someone raises their eyebrows at you it means yes. This explained so much, as for the first 3 weeks we were asking questions to get raised eyebrows in response. To us, and probably anyone else at home this made us think they hadn't heard us and that we needed to repeat ourselves to get a proper answer. It turns out they'd been understanding us all along and this was their way of saying yes!
There isn't a single McDonald's on Efate, no starbucks nothing western food wise. We hadn't realised this until near the end of our stay, and actually, it meant there were lots more little independent take outs like 'VFC' (vanuatu fried chicken) and 'Island time' (our favourite chicken and chips place!)
Since being in NZ we have realised we haven't seen a pedestrian crossing or a traffic lights throughout our time on elective. It's strange the things you notice they don't have that actually they cope perfectly well without!
They'd probably agree, with a raise of the eyebrows!!
