Port Vila airport
Sad to leave
Starting a new adventure
Sitting out the front waiting for the bus the heavens opened, and, much to our dismay, the bus never showed up. It had all been going a little bit too well! After a number of phone calls to 'intercity' the bus company our entire month of travel is booked with, they agreed to refund us the cost of a taxi into town. This amounted to $80 so in the end we felt maybe luck had swung in our favour this time!
We walked through the city and out the other side to our accommodation. It was a bit of a shock to the system, people smoking outside, lots of drinking, a far cry from the polite greetings we used to get at coconut palms. We threw our stuff down and headed out to find something to eat and to have a walk around the city.
We grabbed some Mexican food! (When in New Zealand? ....)
We had a much less successful sleep but woke in the morning to head to the bus station to start our Intercity Auckland sights tour (that we'd managed to blag for almost free!) this was a brilliant way to see the outskirts and the centre of town. We visited memorials for politicians and saw some amazing views of the city centre
View from the bus
Star jumps in Parnell
Sky tower in the distance (far right)
I think she misses Vanuatu
The bus tour took us past the fish market and being fish lovers we felt like we had to explore it further! We walked back to see if we could try the famous green lipped New Zealand mussels. We looked in the restaurant in the surrounding area but decided the fish market itself was probably going to be the best bet
They were absolutely fantastic. The chunkiest mussels we have ever eaten! The sauce was also divine !
They have a green tinge hence 'green lipped'
After our epic lunch we walked into town to do a bit of South Island shopping. It's going to be in the minus numbers there so I definitely needed to buy a warm coat and Amy some other bits and bobs.
We went to the art gallery after our shopping. This was full of all different eras and styles of Art. A retrospective by Billy Apple that we didnt really understand ...
I liked these apples, just didn't understand!
There was a lot of different art to see though and definitely worth a visit as its FREE! A nice way to spend the afternoon anyway and it was on our way back to the hostel.
We had seen a park called the Auckland Domain on our bus tour in the morning it had looked spectacular, a crater of a volcano that hadn't been active in 66 thousand years we wanted to pop back after we had been to the art gallery and have a wander but it was getting a bit late. We power walked up to the War Memorial Museum, a lovely tribute outside to the fallen soldiers, a really nice place to sit as the sun came down.
